I think the American dream is to work from home. I have always wanted to work for myself ever since I was in High School. I worked part time at a pet shop in New Jersey and dreamed of owning one. Back in the 70’s starting your own business required money to buy a building and merchandise to sell. This made it impossible for the average person to have his/her own business. Only the wealthy could start or buy a business. That was the old “brick and mortar” era. We now live in a totally different world and the Internet has changed the business world dramatically. The Internet brings customers to your front door (actually the door of your website) and there is no longer a need for a physical store to do business. You can, and many people do, run a successful business from your own home and with little or no cash required. The Internet makes anything possible for everyone who has an interest in starting a business and working for themselves. I have had a few businesses in the past that I ran from my own home and it took very little money to start. I was a power seller on eBay for over a year, owned a custom bullet business, an adult DVD store, a link list and TGP website. Some of these required some money to get started but not very much. There are ways to make it happen. You just have to be dedicated to make it work. I found ways to get things done when it looked impossible.
Home Based Business - eBay Power Seller
I was an eBay power seller for over a year which means I sold over $1,000 in product each month for 3 consecutive months. eBay is a wonder market place where millions of people shop. Again, eBay brings the customers to your front door. All you have to do is have a product or service to sell. It’s that easy. The hard part of course is finding a product with demand and little competition. This takes some research. I sold adult DVDs and female wrestling DVDs. I enjoyed this industry and found it easy to do the research and then market the product. This is the key to selling. You have to be a customer of the product in order to sell it well. If you would not buy the product then it will be hard for you to market it well. Any how, I enjoyed this industry and contacted many production companies and distributors for the DVDs. I was able to buy the DVDs at wholesale as long as I had a business license which I had under KNM Entertainment. I was able to buy DVDs from all over the world and sell them not only on eBay but also on my own online store (Here is an easy to setup and use shopping cart). I made a good profit on them too. It’s really not that hard to get started. You will meet some really nice people that are owners of businesses and they will actually help you get started. It was a great experience. ebay started to make it difficult to sell adult items ( they wanted to be more family oriented) and then Paypal dropped adult sales so I decided to move on. eBay fees also went up very fast and my profits dwindled. Merchant accounts are not very excited about adult subject matter sales either.
Home Based Business - KDM Custom Bullets
I started my own custom cast bullet business, KDM Custom Bullets. I’ve always loved guns and hunting and so my interest in custom cast bullets was only natural. I got the idea while buying cast bullets for some of my guns. I noticed that there were very few cast bullets manufacturers and their websites were old school and some you have to call to place an order. I also wanted heavier designs than were readily available. I put these 2 short comings together and thought I could do it better and enter a new cast bullet niche. I did some research and bought the molds for the heavyweight cast bullets. I did not want to cast the bullets myself. The thought of melting lead and pouring it made me a little concerned about safety. So what do I do now? Well I’ll hire someone to cast them for me and so I did. Anyway to make a long story short, I sold custom cast bullets online from my online store and on some auction sites. It did quite well for the amount of time I put into it. It made good profits also. I shut down KDM Custom Bullets because of the lead shortage and the fact that all of the bullet casters were back logged for 6 months or more which made it hard for me to get orders in.
Home Based Business - You can do it!
So you see an average person like myself can start a business with little or no money. I only have an AAS degree and some computer certifications and little money to invest but I made some things happen. These business were not a long term deal for me for many reasons but I learned a lot from each one and now I’m on track for the long haul now (my blogs), that is helping others find the American dream…to work from home and for yourself. Nothing else is as satisfying as making your own paycheck and being in control of your destiny.
There are thousands of opportunities for a home based business, just find a product that you are passionate about and has some demand and you’re on your way. Everything else will fall into place.
