I have used quite a few keyword research tools in the past 3 years and very few proved to be useful. Some are just flat out crap! Don’t judge them by their price tag either. I bought one for $147 and it’s worthless and provides incorrect information.
I did find two that are very accurate and useful. Google AdWords keyword tool and Keyword Explorer. They both are free.
Just sign up for Google AdWords and then you can use their keyword tool. It will generate keywords for you based on one you provide. You can see the number of monthly searches and Advertiser competition. The Google keyword tool does not show you the keyword competition though. You need to use Keyword Explorer or Google Search for this.
You can use Keyword Explorer to find out how many sites are competing for any given keywords. This is one of the most important stats for keyword research. It’s very easy to use and is accurate. I use it.
